The Clay We Were Museum
Operated by the Clay County Genealogical & Historical Society, The Clay We Were Museum offers visitors a fascinating journey through the people and stories that shaped Clay County and the Appalachian region. Located in the heart of downtown Manchester, the museum features exhibits on early settlement, salt production, coal mining, logging, agriculture, and military service — all capturing the spirit and resilience of the community.
Housed in the renovated upstairs of the historic former library building, the museum also includes a research library, archives, and rotating displays that preserve and celebrate local heritage. It’s a must-see stop for history enthusiasts, genealogists, and anyone curious about the roots of Eastern Kentucky.
